Coinga, Best Cooperative in Spain in Rural Development 2021

In 2021, Coinga was recognised with the “Best Cooperative in Spain in Rural Development” prize awarded by Agro-food Cooperatives of Spain thanks to our commitment to the region and to the more than 60 partnered farms for which we ensure continuity.

The variety of products, the push for the development of cheese under the Denomination of Protected Mahón-Menorca Origin, the innovative character, the commitment to quality, as well as the services that we offer to the societies and initiatives, and sponsorship of various sporting and social activities were some of the most highly rated considerations.

This prize gives us the opportunity to put Menorca on the map as a rural region – a dream island where tourism is the main economic driver.

We look after our land and our traditions, but the activity that we are developing is not gardening. It’s a real economic activity that generates value and livelihoods, and the capacity to compete at the highest level thanks to the quality of our products and work systems from this small 701 km² island.

Coinga was one of the first cooperatives in Spain to integrate the whole process from the primary sector to the consumer. Almost 60 years later, we are still in Alaior, a town of 9000 inhabitants, innovating, improving our processes and products, striving to demonstrate our values and commitment, conscious of the responsibility that lies with feeding people, and fighting for sustainability in the dairy industry in Menorca.

The best cheese in the world, Mahón-Menorca cheese

Throughout its history, Mahón-Menorca Coinga cheese has won more than 40 national and international awards in the most prestigious cheese competitions in the world.

Coinga semi-cured Mahón-Menorca cheese is the most recognized Mahón-Menorca cheese. It has been elected the best cheese in the world and best Spanish cheese in different editions.
It is difficult to compare it with other cheeses because of its particular flavor. A product linked to the geoclimatic characteristics of Menorca and to a millenary cheese-making tradition that make up a unique recipe certified with Protected Designation of Origin since 1985.

The best Mahón-Menorca cheese

Coinga Mahón-Menorca semi-cured cheese has been awarded 8 times at the World Cheese Awards, the most important cheese competition in the world.
In 1996, it won the bronze medal at the XXI International Cheese Contest held in Wisconsin, where 766 cheeses from the main cheese-producing areas of the world competed. Coinga semi-cured cheese was the only Spanish cheese to win an award out of the 31 cheeses that participated in the competition.
In 2001 it won the “Best Spanish Cheese” award from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in the subgroup of pure cow’s milk pressed cheeses. This was the first edition of the “Best Spanish Cheese” awards. Two years later, our semi-cured cheese also won the runner-up prize for “Best Spanish Cheese” in the cow’s milk group.

Coinga Mahón-Menorca cured cheese has been awarded 4 times in the WORLD CHEESE AWARDS.
